Here's my assumption of what this book is about according to its title. It'll talk leadership with a mission. Not only that, but it'll also inspire the leader to develop a culture within the organization.
Did I get it right? Yes and no.
Yes, because Tribes by Seth Godin is a leadership book. And no, because I got the rest wrong. It presents a different kind of leadership. How? Keep on reading to find it out!
Before that, let's discuss the difference between a tribe and a crowd first.
What is a tribe?
According to Seth Godin, "A tribe is a group of people holding a shared passionate mission. They liaise with one another to spread their common interest/ideas within the community."Tribes don't necessarily have to happen in a corporate setting. It can happen everywhere, predominantly on the world wide web.
Tribes are composed of a group of people that wanted to be part of something that mattered, doing work that’s fun and engaging, desiring to accomplish a common goal.
What is a crowd?
A crowd is a tribe without a leader. A crowd is tribe w/o communication.3 Nuggets from the Book
Here are my top 3 gleanings from the book.- It takes two things to turn a group of people into a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate.
- In order to lead a tribe, all you need to do is motivate people who choose to follow you.
- Tribes grow when people recruit other people. That's how ideas spread as well. The tribes don't do it for you but for each other. Leadership is the art of giving people a platform for spreading ideas that work.

Tribes Book Review
Seth Godin's, Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us is a short read. You can finish the book in one sitting. The topics are grouped together in short paragraphs. Nope, you won't get them in chapters. It's an easy read for the mind to process. Here you'll read success stories of people who led their own tribes. Expect a boost of motivation! You'll get lots of encouragement from the author to lead your own tribe too!
Although I like the idea of a tribe, this book only touches the surface. Sure, it got me motivated, except it didn't move me enough to act.
Rating: 3/5
In Conclusion
Overall, this is an okay read. If you're in a leadership role in need of a quick motivational boost, get this! Here's how a leader of a tribe is different as opposed to a conventional leader according to the author,
Great leaders create movements by empowering the tribe to communicate. They establish the foundation for people to make connections, as opposed to commanding people to follow them.
