Unlocking Potential by Michael K. Simpson Book Review

What is coaching?

In the words of the author, Michael K. Simpson,

  • Coaching is about finding and growing the potential of individuals to achieve goals important to them and to their organization.
  • Coaching is based on the assumption that everyone can grow and that everyone has the potential to become something better, regardless of the point of departure."

How important is coaching in leading individuals, teams, and organizations?

This skill is valuable in the overall health of every organization but often overlooked. Here's how a team benefits from successful coaching gleaned from the book.

"A team that is highly engaged has double the chance of job performance and success. Engaged workers are more productive, profitable, loyal, and customer-focused.

Most importantly, the research also shows that an immediate manager has the most profound influence on an employee’s level of engagement."

How can you be an effective coach?

In the book, you'll learn about the 7 essential coaching skills to effectively coach people.

Now, I won't be sharing them there. You'll have to read Unlocking Potential: 7 Coaching Skills That Transform Individuals, Teams, and Organizations by Michael K. Simpson to find it out yourself. ;)

3 Nuggets from the Book

  • Instead of lecturing, ask questions. As a coach, your task is to help individuals shift paradigms that limit their progress. You can do this by questioning those inaccurate or limiting paradigms.
  • As a coach, if I tell people what to do and how to do it, it becomes my responsibility, not theirs, whether it works or not. Individuals don’t take ownership of commitments that don’t belong to them.
  • Good coaches don’t try to fix people; instead, they seek to amplify awareness, choices, and targeted opportunities.

Unlocking Potential Book Review

Overall, this book is a profitable read for managers, leaders, learners, and for the curious.

My rating below is because some of the ideas are mentioned repetitively. It's like reading the same thing all over again.

But make no mistake, this book is packed with useful insights on the subject. In fact, I'll be incorporating the strategies learned to parent my kids.

RATING: 3/5

In Conclusion

Yes, I would recommend this book. Be sure to take note of those important techniques and strategies. They're a gem!

"Perhaps the best definition of coaching is “unleashing or unlocking the potential of another human being."
