How to Protect a New Floor From Kids and Daily Wear

I can't believe it. It's officially been a month since we moved into our new home. A whole month! And in true fashion, our dining room is still very much a work in progress — because why wait until it's perfect to share it? ;)

Here's the thing I wish someone told me before we picked our flooring: not all floors are created equal. Ours, it turns out, scratches and dents way easier than we expected — something I honestly should have asked our designer about before we committed to it. Lesson learned. Between toddler spills and the kids dragging heavy dining chairs back and forth just to sit down, our floor took a beating fast. Like, faster than I expected.

So we did what any reasonable parent does — we ordered rugs. Three of them, actually. We wanted something muted enough to hold its own against the Hill Country view outside, but forgiving enough that it wouldn't show every stain the kids leave behind. Simple plan, right?

(Side note: that same Hill Country view means our dining room gets hit hard by afternoon sun, so we also added motorized blinds to the windows — one more small fix while we were already in problem-solving mode.)

Only one rug showed up.

Turns out, the carrier couldn't figure out how to deliver to a new build address (still not sure how that's a thing, but here we are), and two of our three rugs got lost somewhere in the shuffle. Weeks went by. The floor kept collecting more scratches and dents. A month of daily life with two kids — that's really all it took.

While we waited, we focused on what we could control. Chair leg protectors went on immediately to slow down the damage. And since we were already in "protect the house" mode, we finally gave our wine rack — a housewarming gift — a real spot on the wall too.

Then, finally, the rug arrived.

The kids didn't just watch us set it up, either. They got right in there with us — smoothing it out, adjusting the corners, so proud to be part of making the space beautiful. Honestly? That part alone made the whole wait worth it. (And instead of a bulky rug pad, we went with grippers this time — more on why below.)

The space looks so much better now, and the floor's a little safer for it. But sitting at our table — the one that's been with us since 2015, that even moved with us all the way to Canada and back — it's obvious it doesn't quite belong in this house anymore. Our needs have changed. We're already dreaming about something that fits our growing family, plus the loved ones who come stay with us from overseas.

One box checked. But this is clearly going to be an ongoing process — fitting this space for our family, one piece at a time.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Floor From Everyday Family Life

1. Ask about floor durability before you pick one

We didn't even make it a full month before the damage started, and it's specific to the floor we chose. If we could go back, we'd ask our designer point-blank how a floor holds up to daily family life — not just how it looks.

2. Kids test every surface, whether you're ready or not

Toddler spills, dining chairs dragged back and forth — it's not dramatic, it's just daily life. But it adds up fast.

3. Chair leg protectors are a quick win while you wait

We didn't have our rug yet, but we weren't going to just watch the floor get worse. These went on immediately and made a real difference in the meantime.

4. Rug grippers can do the job without the bulk of a full pad

Instead of a traditional rug pad, we went with grippers this time — enough to keep the rug in place without adding extra height or bulk under it.

5. Protecting the floor buys you time to make the bigger decisions right

We're not rushing into a new dining table just because the old one looks out of place. Protecting what we have now gives us room to actually plan for what fits our family long-term — instead of buying just to buy.
