Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Baiyoke Sky Hotel is a skyscraper hotel that soars 88 stories above Bangkok. It is the tallest building in the city. Before entering the hotel you will notice stalls at the street which is part of the Pratunam night market.

GETTING THERE

You can choose to take the sky train and alight at Ratchaprarop station. Our hotel (The Sukosol Hotel) is just a stone's throw away from Baiyoke Sky so we decided to take a taxi which cost 50 THB including the tip. The whole trip costs us 100 THB taxi ride back and forth with the tip. Before we enter the lobby we saw the entrance to Pratunam Night Market.

TIP : When taking a taxi ride around Bangkok be sure to ask the taxi driver to turn on the meter. If not they will overcharge you. Don't take the tuktuk because they will charge you double. When we asked a tuktuk driver to take us back to The Sukosol Hotel from Baiyoke Sky he asked us 100 THB which is double the price compared to taking a metered taxi.

BAIYOKE SKY HOTEL

Hotel lobby is located at the 18th floor but we went to the 19th floor to have our dinner buffet reservation checked. In return for the printed reservation I've handed in, the receptionist gave us tickets to the restaurant. By the way this floor is very crowded. There are many groups coming in to have dinner as well. Before we entered the lobby leading to the elevators they've asked us to pose for photo souvenirs but we opt not to. Don't worry they won't force there service to you.

Baiyoke Sky Buffet offers different dining options. The have the Fruit Buffet on the 18th floor, Baiyoke Floating Market on the 75th floor, Bangkok Sky on 76&78th floors, Lucky Caravan Buffet on 79th floor, Stella Palace Restaurant on 79th floor, Bangkok Balcony (indoor) on 81st floor, Bangkok Balcony (premium) on the 81st floor ,Crystal Grill Restaurant on the 82nd floor and the Rooftop Bar and Music on the 83rd floor. They all come in different prices so choose wisely.

For us, we chose the Bangkok Sky on 76&78th floor dinner buffet which cost us 800 THB each. We entered the observatory deck first and then climb up the stairs to the restaurant.

DINNER BUFFET AT 78TH FLOOR

Time for dinner!! There are many varieties of foods to choose from: Thai, Japanese, Western, etc. You have to circle around the area to check all the varieties they offer.

I find that the food is just so so and the place is too crowded. Good thing it was superseded with the beautiful views of Bangkok's skyline. They also have live entertainments going on while you take your meals.

THE REVOLVING ROOF DECK

After having dinner we took the elevator up to the revolving tower which is located on the 84th floor. The view from the revolving tower is so much better because there is no glass window in between. Here's my experience.

I've also made a video out of it. They say a picture paints a thousand words, so how many times does a moving picture paint?

WHAT I THOUGHT

The truth is, I had high expectations for this experience: the ambience and the food, because we are talking about Baiyoke Sky Hotel here, but then I was disappointed. The place was just too crowded. People are just coming in and out. I didn't enjoy the food at all. I didn't even find the entrance of the hotel nice as well as the lobby knowing that it's a 4 star hotel. However the city view from the top floors of hotel is breathtaking. I've read somewhere after our Bangkok trip that the entrance to the Revolving Tower (which didn't even revolve when we visited) is free to the public. But then I don't want to risk it so it's better that we've made the dinner buffet reservation with free entrance to the observation deck and the revolving tower beforehand.
