Chatuchak Weekend Market: Things To Do in Bangkok, Thailand

Gosh, these female vendors are so pretty! They are handing out free food taste to shoppers passing by wearing full makeup on. Yes, complete with alluring false lashes. I'm ashamed of myself for looking like a haggard tourist...

Chatuchak Weekend Market: Things to Do in Bangkok Thailand

It's one hot and humid day in Bangkok, Thailand. Oh no, I'm sweating all over the place! No way, this won't deter me from bargain shopping to Thailand's largest market: the Chatuchak Weekend Market. Are you ready? Let's see what we can find.

Before you go, shop cute shopping bags below:

What You'll Find

Chatuchak Weekend Market is a popular shopping center for locals and tourists alike. You can find everything you can think of at bargain ( you can purchase items at a local price ). Most of the vendors come from factories. Here are some of the items you can find at the market.
  • antique wood carving,
  • clay handicrafts,
  • local souvenirs from every part of Thailand,
  • Buddhist amulets,
  • wooden furniture,
  • hand-made decorated flowers,
  • plant,
  • ceramic wares,
  • dolls,
  • Thai Bejarong,
  • Chinese wares,
  • garden decorated plants,
  • stones, trendy fashions,
  • silk, hill-tribe outfits,
  • fluffy dogs
  • and lots more...

Drop Off Point

We are first-time tourists, who relied entirely on research before coming. We asked Rat, our tour guide who took us to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Maeklong Railway Market, to dropped us off at Mo Chit sky station. From there, it'll be easier for us to find our way in and out of the market.

She also mentioned taking the subway (other than the Skytrain) to get back to our hotel, but I don't want us to get lost in such a large place, I relied on what we know.

Shopping time!

It's overwhelming! What should I get? Gosh, I could have allocated more bhats (Thailand's official currency) for souvenirs. :D

Stalls are group together according to the type of items sold. It's efficient that way; shoppers can easily locate the items they want to purchase. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is divided into 27 sections. It's so large! You could easily get lost. Plan ahead!

Were we in the wrong area? We had a hard time locating snack items to bring back to Singapore. We found our way inside the maze of stalls until we spotted one. Yep, just one amongst a sea of apparels.

TIP: Don't be shy to haggle. If you don't come into agreement, walkout, the vendor would eventually call you back to give you a good deal. ;)

Eat

I'm starving! I lost lots of bodily fluid from all that sweat! Food vendors, several of them, hands out free-tastes of new food items they vend. Though hungry, we didn't take them to avoid an upset stomach while on travel.

Remember them? The pretty female vendors mentioned at the beginning? I admire their effort. You see, the Chatuchak Weekend Market is an open-air market in hot and humid Bangkok!

What do we have here? I got me a sticky rice ice cream which cost 35 THB remembering the delicious one I ate earlier at Damnoen Saduak Market. It's not at par with the latter but still okay nonetheless.

Getting Out

We took the sky train from Mo Chit station to Phaya Thai station (this is the station near our hotel). Fare cost 34 THB per pax.

Nice, we still had time before dinner. We went to a nice massage at the hotel.

The Incident at the Massage Reception

Before the massage, a group of men entered the spa to inquire. One of them (big body-build with no muscles) brazenly shouted to us, where the lady at the reception was.

We were stunned! I manage to respond back to his folly with respect though he didn't deserve one. The lady at the reception finally came and gave them the prices. After discussing amongst themselves they walked out. Crazy! They can't even afford it!

Talk arrogant, walk arrogant yet cannot afford the massage? Walk the talk man! Sorry, I'm not trying to judge, it's common courtesy to be polite when asking strangers for a favor.

Thai Massage Cost

The full body Thai massage cost 1800++ excluding 7% GST and 10% service Charge at Lotus Spa at the Sukosol Hotel. Ah, so relaxing! It took away the headache I got earlier from the heat at Chatuchak Weekend Market. I'd definitely recommend it.
